Video mashup contest!

Posted by: Serena In: Events

This year, film club is trying something new. No, we’re not watching movies in the wrong aspect ratio. And we’re not organizing ourselves into a league of super villains bent on world domination and exotic ice cream flavors. We are also not auctioning off Stephen Spielberg’s kidneys to raise money for a real movie theater on campus.

It’s much more exciting than all of that, because it’s… a super awesome mashup contest!!!

Let’s start with the basics. A video mashup, according to wikipedia, is “the combination of multiple sources of video—which usually have no relevance with each other—into a derivative work often lampooning its component sources, or another text.”

Here are some great examples of video mashups:

So at this point, you’re probably wondering, “But how can I make my very own life-changing video mashup? Those look so complicated!” Well, not if you follow these simple steps:

  1. Pick your subject (Most successful mashups combine two very different movies for comedic effect. Choose wisely!)
  2. Find your video editing program (Windows computers come with Windows Movie Maker, and Macs come with iMovie. Both will work fine for this.)
  3. Get the clips you’ll be using! (If you want to rip footage from a DVD, there are a some great programs out there. Use HandBrake to get scenes from the DVD, and MPEG Streamclip to trim them down before importing them into your video editing program. Both are available for Windows and Mac, and free!)
  4. Import your clips (Usually, you will be able to simply drag and drop the clips into your editing program. Remember, the ‘help’ menu is your friend.)
  5. Edit your video! (You should have plenty of freedom to rearrange your clips, cut them, add effects, or even put in an alternate audio track. Take some time to experiment.)
  6. Export it (You can usually find the ‘export’ option somewhere in the top menu. You’ll want it in either .avi, .mp4, or .mov)
  7. Upload to YouTube! (If you don’t already have a YouTube account, you’ll have to create one, which only takes about 30 seconds. Then upload your video and smirk at all your technologically challenged friends.)

So here are the basics of our contest:

DEADLINE: January 22, 2009

REQUIREMENTS: Under 5 minutes in length, content must come one or more movies. You must be a student or faculty member currently attending the University of Mary Washington. You may work individually or in teams.

PRIZES: Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners. The contest will be judged by both a panel of officers and by popular vote. These [currently top secret] prizes will be everything you ever dreamed of and more.

If you have any questions about the contest, rules, or technical aspects, send us an email and I’ll respond with lightning-fast speed. That is, if I’m at the computer. ALSO, I am happy to help out with the exporting and uploading steps. If you finish your editing by the 15th of January (one week before the deadline), I will rush to your aid like Bicycle Repairman and walk you through the rest of the process.
